**Me gusta (verb). 

Example: Me gusta nadar. I like to swim.

When using verbs in the infinitive form, gustar is also singular (gusta).

1. The verb gustan (to be pleasing) is used to express the English verb “to like”. 

   It is an idiom--sentences that do not translate literally into English correctly. 

1. Me gusta el reloj.  I like the watch. Literally: To me is pleasing the watch.

1. Le gustan los carros.   He likes the cars. Literally: To him are pleasing the pictures.

1. Since some verbs (les gusta, le gusta, etc.) can be used for different groups of people, you can clarify by adding:

A él, le gusta         A ella, le gusta                A Usted, le gusta

A Ustedes, les gusta         A ellos, les gusta      A ellas, les gusta

¿Le gusta a Usted la clase?     ¿Les gusta a ellos bailar?

1. Don’t forget to use the singular form (gusta) with the infinite form of verbs.
2. If you are asking Who likes something.

1. If singular, one person, use a quién

you will use the el/ella/usted form (le gusta or le gustan)

¿A quién, le gusta la pizza?  

Who likes the pizza (assuming 1 person)

1. If plural, more than 1 person, use a quiénes

you will use the ellas/ellos/ustedes form (les gusta or les gustan)

Notes:

"de" is a word that does not translate correctly into English. It can translated roughly to mean of or from.
It has several different purposes.

1) It can show possession or ownership.
In English, we say Juan's, or Kelly's, and use an 's, in Spanish, however, they use the word de.
To say Mike's book, you would say el libro de Mike
To say Meg's car, you would say, el carro de Meg

2) It can show relationships.
Juan's friend would be el amigo de Juan
Erin's boyfriend would be el novio de Erin
Heather's mom, el madre de Heather

3) It can show type. Remember the Ch. 2 vocab?
Adventure books: los libros de aventuras
Romantic movies: las películas de amor
music from Puerto Rico: la música de Puerto Rico
Spanish Teacher: la profesora de español

4) It can mean from.
I'm from IL. Soy de IL
He's from KY. Es de KY.

When de goes in front of el it forms a special contraction called del.
If you try to say de el together it sounds like del. This how you can remember to say del.
Example: email of the boy
el correo electrónico del muchacho. (instead of saying de el muchacho (boy) you say del muchacho)
